Finding hope in the patron saint of lost causes

Today is October 28, the celebration of Sts. Simon and Jude, who were apostles.

At Mass for today’s feast, we listen to the words of St. Paul guiding us, “You are no longer outsiders and temporary residents, but you are citizens together with the holy ones and part of the family of God, established on the foundation of the Apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone” (Eph 2:19).

No disrespect to St. Simon, but my nephew is named Jude and St. Jude is the patron saint of my father, so my attention will be on him today. St. Jude Thaddeus — recognized to us as the patron saint of hopeless causes — provides a constant reminder of God’s restorative power and unyielding presence, even during our most challenging times. His healing advocacy is grounded in his intimate connection with Christ, as one of the Twelve Apostles selected to disseminate the Good News. His existence stands as proof that no circumstance is outside God’s influence and no soul is beyond his restorative embrace.

Through St. Jude, we are reminded that we are not alone in our suffering or challenges. As participants in the family of God, as St. Paul highlights, we are connected to a larger spiritual truth, a community rooted in the Apostles, who bring Christ’s healing power to humanity. We are a part of the Church!

St. Jude’s mighty intercession emanates from the community of believers, with Christ as the cornerstone, ensuring everything remains connected. When we seek St. Jude’s aid in prayer, particularly in moments of hopelessness, we are anchored back to our spiritual roots — where we discover, most significantly, revitalized hope! Through the petitions of this apostle, we are reminded that no sickness or obstacle can distance us from the restorative love of Christ, which pours through his saints.

In one of my cherished novenas to St. Jude (and there are many available), we beseech, “Pray that I may receive the grace to embrace God’s divine will even if it brings me pain and hardship.” At times, the greatest blessing bestowed isn’t a remarkable transformation; instead, it’s discovering tranquility and acceptance right where we stand.

However, let us pray boldly today, placing even the toughest circumstances in the hands of St. Jude’s intercession:

O God, who through the holy apostles have led us to recognize your name, kindly grant, through the intercession of saints Simon and Jude, that the Church may consistently expand by the addition of those who trust in you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and rules with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
